Start a Virtual PC with Ubuntu 5.10 Linux in 5 minutes
In order to give a strong impetus to the techniques of virtualization and make it a mass phenomenon, VMware has recently changed its policy to distribute the software for free starting to distribute both its product, known as VMware Server is a light version called VMware Player .
The main difference between the server and the player is essentially in the fact that the second is only able to launch a virtual machine pre-existing and pre-configured, while the server version allows the creation and installation from scratch, with the opportunity to change the hardware parameters of the virtual machine.
But since the site already eSite VMware also a section "Virtual Appliance" that makes available a large amount of virtual machines ready for use, and because of me I do not have special needs when the configuration I wanted to opt for 'Installation of simple player who also is lighter and less intrusive.
So I downloaded the setup file for VMware Player (at the time of writing this is VMware-player-1.0.1-19317.exe) and the zip file containing the virtual machine of Linux Ubuntu 5.10.
A download is complete, I simply launched the setup and unzipped the zip, VMware Player, when it only requires to indicate the position of the virtual machine to start and the game is done: I could see the boot of a Linux operating system within Windows XP using the power of VMware's virtual machine! Do you think even for network connectivity I have not had to do absolutely nothing: VMware automatically installs a virtual network adapter that is configured with bridging the physical existing PC.

Alessandra,
as I understand it would like to know how to see a directory on the Windows (running VMware Player) from the Ubuntu Linux virtual machine.
Because 'it is actually 2 separate machines that can be seen through the network and with two different ip address, I would say that the most logical and' to use samba. Windows side put in the shared directory you want to access and with regard linux follow this simple tutorial: http://cri.ch/linux/docs/sk0001.html
